by Patrick Rothfuss
The second book in Patrick Rothfuss‘ very much unfinished Kingkiller Series spends a lot of time meandering around in a lot of sideplots, but it’s still beautifully told. However, it’s not as brilliant as its prequel.
The plot doesn’t really evolve, apart from Kvothe growing up a bit, killing people and meeting Cinder again, but the writing is as extraordinary as in the first one. Of course, by now it gets more and more irritating that Kvothe is brilliant at everything -now it’s not just all the stuff at school, but also lovemaking.
Meanwhile, Denna is going really much on my nerves. What’s also going on my nerves is that he doesn’t just tell her why he feels this way about the Chandrian instead of starting a stupid, teensy fight. Anyway, I’m not a big fan of Denna.
It’s still a brilliant book, of course, but it can’t live up to the first one which is easily in my Top 5. And dear God, this was published nine years ago, when Doors of Stone was said to be almost finished. I know the author’s not our bitch and writer’s block can be a bitch sometimes, but nine years? Even if Doors would have nine hundred pages, that’d mean a hundred pages per year. So one page in 3,5 days…doesn’t sound too hard for a book that was supposedly as good as finished nine years ago. Well, I guess we just have to keep waiting.
