Behold: my first five star-read of 2021. ‚Best Served Cold‘ features an expertly constructed plot from the master of character writing. It’s a wild mixture of The Count of Monte Cristo and Kill Bill, a revenge story par excellence, graced with Abercrombie’s fleshed-out anti-heros: his best book yet.
A dark, bloody, impressively written wrap-up to a stellar trilogy that leaves room for other books to pick up the action again. I had a hard time getting into this trilogy but in the end all I can say is: it’s one of the best trilogies I’ve ever read. Definitely the second-best trilogy I read this year after the Gentleman Bastard trology (crying intensifies will I ever get The Thorn of Emberlain?).
Shame on me. Shame on me for not joining Team Abercrombie immediately. Shame on me for rating those other books three stars. Shame on me for not liking these characters in The Blade Itself immediately. I bow to Lord Grimdark and beg his mercy. And I kiss his feet and swear to never doubt his magnificene again.
